Medical Transport
To organise a driver for your appointment please call our Duty Officer on 0845 5190855 and preferably between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Mondays to Fridays.
We ask that people contact us just as soon as they receive their appointment, as early notification makes it easier to find a driver.
We provide a door to door service, with volunteers using their private cars, for those without access to transport of their own, to help them attend their essential medical appointments.
The only restriction is that we can only take people who are able to get in and out of a car unaided. If not able to do this, then the GP will organise transport to get people to and from their hospital appointments.
Provided we are told well in advance of an appointment we can usually take lightweight and folding wheelchairs in the boot of a volunteer’s car. However not all of our drivers are willing to do this and not all have had suitable Manual Handling training for lifting heavy weights.
Alternatively our volunteers can find a wheelchair at the hospital, but we need to know in advance, so that additional time can be factored into the trip to ensure that people do not arrive late for their appointment, if a wheelchair is not readily available at the hospital.
We ask people we transport to make a voluntary contribution towards the running costs of our drivers’ cars.
